Risk Management of Emotional Disorders 2224

John Lockenour, DC, DABCO, DABCA

During this class, the following topics will be presented to identify psychological stressors in the chiropractic acupuncture practice that may lead to increased risk or harm to the patient.

For millennia, Chinese medicine physicians have asserted that the seven emotions can be a major cause of disease. Following emotional trauma, the body becomes susceptible to pathogens and organ dysfunction, leading to a variety of ailments.

Introduction to Emotional Stressors

This hour will examine how to help individuals better identify, understand, and manage their mental skills. The program will discuss responses to stress, performance preparation strategies, and focusing techniques designed to help patients be more effective under pressure. Topics to be covered include positive self-talk, confidence, concentration, motivation, goal setting, peak performance states, self-regulation techniques to control arousal, and coping strategies for dealing with the multiple demands facing daily life.

Co-treating with other Health Care Providers

Students will learn and evaluate current legal and ethical guidelines used in the counseling and psychology professions. Students will apply ethical decision-making models and formulate effective, evidence-based collaborative strategies used to resolve emotional dilemmas that arise when working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Students will also learn what it means to integrate a professional counselor and other mental health professionals into the treatment plan.
